Greater than the priests Greater Kile Baker March 23rd, 2025 Summary of Hebrews: Whatever you think of Jesus, He’s greater. Hebrews 1:1-3 Long ago God spoke to the ancestors by the prophets at different times and in different ways. 2 In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son. God has appointed him heir of all things and made the universe through him. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. What is a priest? Priests in the Old Testament Priests offered various sacrifices, such as for sin, offering, etc. (Leviticus 16:15-16). Priests weren’t elected, or selected, they were descendents of Aaron. (Numbers 3:5-10). Priests entered the Holy of Holies once a year (Leviticus 16:29-30). Priests had to offer sacrifices for their own sins (Hebrews 5:1-3). Priests wore sacred garments to signify holiness (Exodus 28:2). Priests served in the temple and performed maintenance. (Ex 30:7-8; 27:20-21; Lev 24:2-4) Priests taught the law. (Lev 10:11) Priests were mediators between God and people (Exodus 28:1). Examples of modern day “priests” Roman Catholic priests Easter Orthodox priests Anglican priests Lutheran priests Protestant pastors and ministers Military Chaplains Hebrews 4:14-16 "Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus, the Son of God—let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need." Three benefits of Jesus being our high priest Jesus has taken our sin on earth, and gone to represent us to God the Father in Heaven. Jesus can sympathize with our weaknesses and provide us the strength to boldly seek God. Jesus’ sacrifice means we don’t have to earn our way to God — but we do have to show effort. Your role as the “priesthood of all believers” (1 Peter 2:9) Develop your relationship with God through prayer, worship, and studying scripture. Offer spiritual sacrifices through serving, giving, and sacrificing. Share your faith and disciple others. Intercede for others through prayer. Stand out in the world by living a holy life.
