Pastor Roy Conover - October 23rd, 2022 We want what’s new but we’re more comfortable with what’s old. Knowing Your Covenants Noahic Covenant (Genesis 6:1-8, 9:1-17) Unconditional. For the world. Reveals God’s preservation of all life. Abrahamic Covenant (Genesis 12:1-3; 15): Unconditional. For Israel and the World. Reveals God’s blessing of land, people, inheritance and redemption. Mosaic (Old) Covenant: (Exodus 19-24, Deuteronomy 28) Conditional. For Israel. Reveals God’s Law, and how to be blessed or cursed. Davidic Covenant: (2 Samuel 7; 1 Chronicles 17:11-14) Unconditional. For Israel and the world. Reveals that from the line of David, a savior would come. Jesus’ (New) Covenant: (Jeremiah 31:31-34, Luke 22:20) Unconditional and Conditional. For Israel and the World. Reveals the savior and how to be saved The Danger of Mixing Covenants 2 Corinthians 3:7-11 Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, transitory though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts! Exodus 34:29-35 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord… When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face. But whenever he entered the Lord’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, they saw that his face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord. The Message of Moses (Old Covenant) The Message of Jesus (New Covenant) Temporary Permanent Death Life Condemnation Righteousness The Old Covenant was complex in its explanation, but simple in its application. It showed Israel what right and wrong actions looked like towards themselves, people and God. The New Covenant is simple in its explanation, but complex in its application. It compels people to act because of what God has already done for the world. Galatians 3:24-29 So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. The problem is not that the Law isn’t good. The problem is that we aren’t good. God’s law condemns me. God’s love frees me. 2 Corinthians 3:12-18 Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away. But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. Religion veils God. The Gospel unveils us.
