The Family Tree Jesse: The Shepherd of Kings Kile Baker November 24th, 2024 Jesus’ Family Tree: Exploring God’s perfect plan through imperfect people. The Legacy of Kings: David, Solomon, and the Kings of Judah Matthew 1:1-16 An account of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham: 2Abraham fathered Isaac, Isaac fathered Jacob, Jacob fathered Judah and his brothers, 3Judah fathered Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez fathered Hezron, Hezron fathered Aram, 4Aram fathered Amminadab, Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, 5Salmon fathered Boaz by Rahab, Boaz fathered Obed by Ruth, Obed fathered Jesse, 6and Jesse fathered King David. David fathered Solomon by Uriah’s wife… 1 Samuel 17:12-20 Now David was the son of the Ephrathite from Bethlehem of Judah named Jesse. Jesse had eight sons and during Saul’s reign was already an old man. 13 Jesse’s three oldest sons had followed Saul to the war, and their names were Eliab, the firstborn, Abinadab, the next, and Shammah, the third, 14 and David was the youngest. The three oldest had followed Saul, 15 but David kept going back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s flock in Bethlehem. 16 Every morning and evening for forty days the Philistine came forward and took his stand.17 One day Jesse had told his son David, “Take this half-bushel of roasted grain along with these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp. 18 Also take these ten portions of cheese to the field commander. Check on the well-being of your brothers and bring a confirmation from them. 19 They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah fighting with the Philistines.” 20 So David got up early in the morning, left the flock with someone to keep it, loaded up, and set out as Jesse had charged him. Isaiah 10:33-34 Look, the Lord God of Armies will chop off the branches with terrifying power, and the tall trees will be cut down, the high trees felled. 34 He is clearing the thickets of the forest with an ax, and Lebanon with its majesty will fall. Isaiah 11:1-4, 6-7 Then a shoot will grow from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him — a Spirit of wisdom and understanding, a Spirit of counsel and strength, a Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. 3 His delight will be in the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, he will not execute justice by what he hears with his ears, 4 but he will judge the poor righteously and execute justice for the oppressed of the land. 6 The wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the goat. The calf, the young lion, and the fattened calf will be together, and a child will lead them. 7 The cow and the bear will graze, their young ones will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like cattle. Lessons from Jesse’s Legacy: God sees something He loves in the people we love. God’s promises are fulfilled in His time, and they require patience during our time. God will bring about His will even when His people aren’t walking in His ways. How you can leave a great legacy God will remember your character, even as history forgets your accomplishments. Cultivating your character: Requires the presence of God’s word, the knowledge of God’s will, and the intention to follow God’s ways. (Read Ephesians 5) Families need everyday faithfulness far more than extraordinary acts of faith. Everyday faithfulness: Requires you to do what you say, pray every day, trust and obey.
